White House open to stimulating tax payers

Many people wondered (and asked aloud) when Congress voted to spend $700 Billion to buy bad loans from banks, "Where's mine?"

Well the answer is, it may be coming soon.

The Bush Administration today is said to be "warming" to the idea of another round of "economic stimulus" checks for Americans.

I don't understand the concept, really. Why spend money we don't have and will have to borrow from China, creating further debt for ourselves later? But hey, I'm just a mere taxpayer. What the hell do I know.

NHL: Vanek's the best ...

The NHL has announced that Thomas Vanek is their first star of the week.
Buffalo Sabres left wing Thomas Vanek, Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom and Dallas Stars rookie left wing Fabian Brunnstrom have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending October 19.

The 24-year-old Vanek picked up eight points (six goals, two assists), in a week that saw Buffalo post a 3-0-1 record. Vanek has nine points (7-2--9) in his first five games and is off to the best start of his four-year career, posting at least one goal in each of Buffalo’s first five games.

Included in Vanek’s League-leading goal total last week were shorthanded goals in consecutive games (Oct. 13 at NYI, Oct. 15 at NYR), and a power-play goal in Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss in Atlanta. Vanek also has a League-best 32 shots in his five games.

Dialog show notes for 10/20/08

This morning on Dialog, Bob Confer discussed the Rochester D&C not endorsing any incumbents.

Here's a link to that editorial ... with some choice excerpts below.
In good conscience, we cannot support any of the incumbents because of their failure to consistently push for radical change in Albany. They are: Sens. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, Jim Alesi, R-Perinton, Joe Robach, R-Greece, George Maziarz, R-Newfane, Assemblypersons Joe Errigo, R-Conesus, Susan John, D-Rochester, Joe Morelle, D-Irondequoit, David Gantt, D-Rochester, Bill Reilich, R-Greece, David Koon, D-Perinton, Stephen Hawley, R-Batavia.

Among the challengers, only two, Democrats Paloma Capanna and David Nachbar, both candidates for the state Senate, persuaded us that they'd bring the kind of fresh, critical thinking needed to remake Albany. The Democrat and Chronicle enthusiastically endorses them.

Our unprecedented stand climaxed a yearlong "Challenging Albany" campaign that included gathering more than 2,000 "Fed up" coupons from readers and shipping them to legislative leaders. This effort, combined with other public outcries from around the state such as a stinging report by the Brennan Center for Justice, which quantitatively concluded that New York had the most dysfunctional legislature in the nation, got lawmakers' attention. But obviously, it was only long enough to take off the heat.

Reason show notes 102008

Today's show was sort of all over the place, which is fine by me.

I'm glad to have Frank back at the helm.

And thanks to Mark and Laura for calling.

Weekly update for Oct. 20, 2008

News, notes and necessities

items of interest the week of Oct. 20, 2008

an occasional update from me, Scott Leffler

News: Slower this week than last.

Monday: On Dialog, I'll be joined by Bob Confer to discuss Albany issues.

Tuesday: Sabres LiveBlog from HSBC beginning at 7 p.m.

Thursday: On Reason, I'll talk about the economy with Martin Wolf, and LiveBlog the Sabres game beginning at 8 p.m.

Friday: Lockport Mayor Mike Tucker on Dialog.

Notes: I really have started catching up on podcasts. But it's a slow process. Sorry. I've contacted all of the third party presidential candidates who will be on the ballot in New York. Hopefully I'll bring you more. But the Nader interview went well, wouldn't you say?

This Saturday's game will be the first game of the season that I won't be LiveBlogging. I'll be on my way back from NYC with no access to the internet or the game. :(

I've talked with both sheriff's candidates in Niagara County. We're going to get them both in studio soon.

Necessities: Don't forget my friends at WNYMedia.net.

I sent this to you because I thought you might appreciate it. If I was wrong, please just respond and ask to be taken off the mailing list. I'll take care of it. If this was forwarded to you and you'd like to receive future updates, please email scott@scottleffler.com and ask to be added to the list. I'll make that happen.
