Duped CBS Regrets Airing Disputed Bush Memos ... that's their headline. Not mine. CBS is admitting that they can't verify that the documents are originals. That doesn't mean that they're saying they're fakes. So who says CBS was duped, then? Reuters? Why the h#ll does George Bush always get the benefit of the doubt from the media. What about the fake documents showing Iraq was trying to buy yellow-cake uranium from Niger? Oops. No accountability there. But some documents about Bushy Wushy MAY be fake (not ARE fake ... but MAY BE) and CBS rolls yet again. CBS. The channel that canned the Reagans movie. The network that refused to air an anti-Bush commercial during the Superbowl. And now they're appologizing cause they can't prove something to be true (so it's assumed that the opposite is true). I'm tellin' ya - I'm really irritated about this. This country keeps giving George W. Bush the benefit of the doubt and because of it, young men and women die every day in a war over daddy's pride. No one "regrets" airing news stories about WMDs in Iraq. Where's that appology? That only killed 1,000 of our soldiers (and tens of thousands of Iraqis). No big deal.

Securing the homeland ...
Let's play a little game of "use your imagination" here.
Imagine, if you will, that you've got a Civil War era farmhouse on a nice big plot of land ... surrounded by a normal old picket fence. You've got a shed, a barn, and just for pretend sake, here, a chicken coop filled with chicks. Pretend it's the nicest chicken coop in the world. Everyone envies it. And one day, inexplicably, some cretin from the next township takes his pickup truck and rams into it - killing about 3,000 of your chickens.
Let's imagine that you find out the driver of the truck was named John Smouse. He and his family despise you. The even sent a tape into the local community television station to let the world know that it was them who killed your chicks and they're awfully proud of it, too.
So. What do you do?
If you're George Bush, you round up all the Smouses (or would that be Smice?) and take them far far away where no one will hurt them. Then you plow through Farmer Jones' fields, killing all his corn, wheat, and a good percentage of his livestock. Once that's done, you get a bunch of folks with big tractors to ram through the fences of the Speers farm and sit there - antagonizing the living crap out of those Speers. You send your own tape to community television explaining that since the cowardly Smouses (again - Smice?) attacked you, the creator told you to round up all the Speers and bring them to a deserted part of the area where you can torture them into telling you why the Smouses did such horrible things to you.
Of course, the key to ALL of this is to make sure that you're doing it as far away from your Civil War era farmhouse as possible.
Meanwhile, back at that farmhouse, take the fence down. Paint pro-yourself propaganda on the barn ... and occasionally stand in front of it saying things that may further irritate the Smouses ... and the Speers. After all, they're cut from the same cloth in your eyes. Jump on your tractor and proclaim yourself the victor of this little farm gang fight ... even if the fighting is still going on over at the Speers' farm and the folks that you sent there to do your dirty work get mauled daily and have eggs thrown at them.
Make sure that the eggmunitions that you have are all centralized in the middle of your farm rather than spread around. In fact, it'd be nice to save a couple bucks. Why not close down a couple of those eggmunition centers?
Oh, and don't forget to occasionally say something derogatory about the Scheer family ... cause you heard they may be hiding eggs. And you want them to know that you know.

I'm all for making sure we're secure. September 11th was a travesty. It was brutal. It was ugly. And we should do everything in our power to make sure it doesn't happen again. Well, almost everything in our power. I'm not in favor of shredding the Constitution, but other than that - let's get secure, baby.
But we're not working on making ourselves more secure. HOMEland security begins at HOME. We seem much more interested in IRAQIland security.

Ah, the use of the universal THEM ... brilliantly employed with the make-believe concept that we have to fight SOMEWHERE. (And I thought Republicans didn't believe in zero-sum games).

And who is THEM? The Iraqis? They were going to come fight us here? With their WMD, right? Or were the Taliban going to come kill us with heroin?
We could have just spent some time and energy securing the border. Novel concept. And I'm not against bolstering the military. Just not for offensive measures. Ever notice, by the way, that the Pentagon is the home to the "Department of DEFENSE?" Not the Department of Offense. Not even the Department of the MILITARY. We wisely thought - at one point a long time ago - that military in the United States should be a defensive measure.
I'd like to continue to follow that guideline.
Of course, it'd be easier to defend the homeland if the Department of Defense wasn't having its bases closed. Nowhere do we better understand that than on the Canadian border - right here in Niagara Falls, New York - where they're closing our military base to save $180 Million (over what, 20 years?), while we've spent nearly 10 times that over the last 18 months in our latest desert paradise, Iraq.
One last thought before wrapping this up; while I would like our immigration policy to be more open and comprehensive, I would like our borders to be less porous. Bring the military home and line them up on the Mexican AND Canadian borders to make sure people we don't want in aren't getting in.

The News endorses Brian Higgins to be the Democrat to lose to Nancy Naples ... Actually, I saw Brian's ad on TV the other night and it was pretty slick. He might just stand a chance if he can afford to keep the ads running. Nancy's ad, meanwhile, I found to be bland. Could be more interesting than I imagined. San Francisco Leads the Way in Instant Run-off Voting. This is the system that Green Party presidential candidate David Cobb was discussing on Dialog last Friday. The system makes sense to me ... Speaking of Cobb, it appears that Ralph Nader is asking the California Green Party to kick Cobb off the ballot and give the spot to Nader. Gee, what a good guy that Nader is. And he calls Gore a sore loser.

I've got to confess. I'm pretty excited about tomorrow's guest. He is - to date - the most well-known guest I will have interviewed ... either on Dialog or during my previous life as a newspaper reporter. He's been a candidate for president in every election since 1976. Plus he ran for US Rep in Virginia in 1990. His web site lists him as a Democratic pre-candidate for US President. We'll ask him (among other things) what that means tomorrow.

You may notice a few changes to the web site. I'm trying to update/freshen it, while giving it a more universal look. There were two primary blues on the web pages and that's always driven me nuts. Most of the blues should now be the same color - with the exception of a page or two here or there. The poll is now linked straight from the front page, making it easier to access. And the Dialog page is a little cleaner looking, in my honest opinion. Over the next few days and weeks, I hope to make additional changes, including some all-new links that you should find of interest, and an update to the picture page to incorporate the newer pictures which are currently found on the blog ... plus some other pictures that I've said were coming ... and now they really are. I mentioned this morning that I had a beef with the Erie County Democratic Party. Well, here's an email I wrote to EC Dem Party Chairman Len Lenihan after finding out that the party unanimously endorsed Jack Davis for congress - completely ignoring Paul Fallon. Anyway - read the letter, you'll like it. BTW, I've not gotten a response from either Lenihan or the handful of Democratic Party "leaders" I sent it to from Niagara County.

Thanks to Teresa Martinez, managing editor of the Niagara Gazette for being Wednesday's guest on Dialog. Teresa said she'd gladly return in the future ... and I think I speak for the majority of you when I say, "We'll gladly have you back, Teresa." That is a copy of Wednesday's Gazette she's reading, BTW (just prior to the start of Wednesday's show). Cramming for the exam, if you will.

Who Was Really In Charge? I understand that in Michael Moore's new movie, Farenheit 9/11, the question of Bush's response to the terror attacks of Sept. 11 is made. Did Bush hang out to read childrens' books that day cause he wasn't told to do otherwise by Cheney? Was Bush completely clueless about what to do? This MSNBC article furthers that idea. Oh yeah - as a member of the liberal media, I'm duty-bound to tell you to go see Moore's movie. It comes out Friday.

Seems my friends at Greater Niagara News got new websites ... hosted by the Indiana division of Community Newspapers Holding, Inc. They look pretty slick. Too bad the URL on the Gazette's page spells Niagara wrong ... note: niagra.cnhiindiana.com ... oops.
